Default Fall-out of arms sale to Taiwan....China to impose sanctions on UScompanies selling arms

Among the many options (against US arms sales to Taiwan), China has
started with a review of relationship with the USA...
I am sure, the USA is fully prepared for China's reaction...freezing
relationship.

However, Damian Grammaticas, BBC News, say that China's threat to
impose sanctions on US firms supplying arms to Taiwan is perplexing.
It is not perplexing if the BBC reporter is better informed.

Among the many US arms manufacturers, Boeing is a major supplier of
fighter jets and helicopters. Airline companies in China will be asked
to stop buying Aircraft from Boeing...an arms supplier.
Air China has on order with Boeing 15 Boeing 787, 15 Boeing 777-300ERs
and 30 Boeing 737-800s to be delivered from 2010 to 2015. Other
airlines in China have equally large orders with Boeing.

US computer companies who supply the military computer systems to
Taiwan will also be sanctioned.
The China market will suddenly be closed to them.

To the USA, it is a trade off.... more arm sales business in Taiwan vs
less aircraft sales and less computer sales to China.

I am sure, Obama has done his homework.

.... some administration officials suggested privately that the timing
of the arms sales and the tougher language on Iran was calculated to
send a message to Beijing to avoid assumptions that President Obama
would be deferential to China over American security concerns and
existing agreements.

“This was a case of making sure that there was no misunderstanding
that we will act in our own national security interests,” one senior
administration official said. A second Obama administration official,
also speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of
the issue, said pointedly: “Unlike the previous administration, we did
not wait until the end of our administration to go ahead with the arms
sales to Taiwan. We did it early.”
